How to Choose a Web Development Agency Without Getting Locked Into Subscription Traps

The Real Risk Isn't Overpaying — It's Getting Locked In #

Most people evaluate a web development agency purely on price. But the bigger long-term risk is signing up with an agency that structures things so you can never leave — where your "website" is really just access to their platform, and stopping payment means losing everything.

The Vendor Lock-In Playbook to Watch For #

  • No source code handover. You pay for the website, but the actual code lives entirely on the agency's proprietary system — you have no copy, no access, no way to move it.
  • Mandatory ongoing "maintenance" fees framed as required, not optional, even for a site that doesn't need active maintenance.
  • Hosting bundled with no alternative — you're not allowed to move to your own hosting provider even if you want to.
  • Vague scope language that lets "one small revision" balloon into a paid change request with no clear boundary.

The Checklist Before You Sign Anything #

1. Ask directly: "Do I get full source code ownership after final payment?" A trustworthy agency answers this immediately and confidently. Hesitation or vague answers is the single biggest warning sign.

2. Ask where the site will be hosted, and whether you control that account. You should be able to move hosting providers if you ever choose to — Vercel, Hostinger, AWS, wherever — without needing the agency's permission.

3. Get the warranty period and scope-change policy in writing. A fair agency defines both clearly upfront — for example, a defined post-launch bug-fix window, and a stated policy (like a fixed percentage) for scope additions, rather than open-ended "contact us for pricing" ambiguity.

4. Check if there's a real portfolio of live, working sites, not just mockups or screenshots. Actually click through a couple of them on your own phone.

5. Read the cancellation and refund terms before, not after, paying anything. A studio confident in its work will have a clear, published refund policy rather than a vague "case by case" answer.

Why This Matters More Than the Price Tag #

A slightly more expensive agency that hands over full code ownership, hosts transparently, and defines scope clearly is almost always the better long-term deal versus a cheaper one that quietly locks you into their ecosystem. The cheap option's real cost shows up 18 months later, when you want to make a change and realize you don't actually control your own website.

The One-Sentence Test #

Before signing with any agency, ask yourself: if I stopped paying this agency tomorrow, would I still have a working website I could hand to someone else? If the honest answer is no, that's not a website — it's a subscription wearing a website's clothes.
